At Expo City, the Belarusian leader was welcomed by UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. In total, about 150 heads of state and government will participate in the summit on December 1st-2nd.
After the arrival of the leaders of the countries, a photo and opening ceremony of the summit will take place, followed by a plenary session. During his speech, Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to announce Belarus' approaches and proposals to address global issues of climate and environmental security. The President also has a number of meetings and negotiations scheduled on the side-lines of the summit.
The summit is taking place within the framework of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28). The futuristic Expo City in the southern part of Dubai has been chosen as the venue. In 2021-2022, the first World EXPO in the Middle East was held here.
On the eve of the summit, Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik told reporters that international co-operation in the fight against climate change should be based on a non-discriminatory and fair basis. He noted that Belarus' participation in the summit underlines the importance that the country attaches to issues of environmental safety and protection. "Climate problems unite all countries. This is an issue on the international agenda that is of a unifying nature. We will contribute to strengthening international co-operation on climate issues. This co-operation should be based on a non-discriminatory, fair and inclusive basis and contribute to solving global issues," Mr. Aleinik said.
