Kochanova: it’s important to understand how young people see Belarus’ future
Today’s youth is much more politicised than previous generations – as stated by Natalya Kochanova, the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic and President’s authorised representative for Minsk, at a meeting with the participants of the School of Young Voters project at the Belarusian State University
Ms. Kochanova told the young people that Belarus had made a huge leap in its development in a short period of time, “Thirty years is a short period of time from the historical point of view, but during this time Belarus has achieved significant successes. We are proud of what we have achieved. During this time, the incomes of the population have grown, industrial output has increased fourfold, and the length of roads in the country has doubled to 80,000 kilometres. In the 1990s there were 500,000 cars in Belarus, today there are 3 million. This is the work that can be seen and appreciated.”
As the Speaker of the Council of the Republic noted, a serious stage in the formation of our statehood and independence has been passed over these years, “This is extremely important. Today, when we see the events in the world, we can appreciate how people strive to live on their land, in their country, according to their laws and traditions. There are more than 50 hot spots in the world. We are all witnesses of these events. Therefore, peaceful policy, sovereignty and independence of Belarus, development according to its own laws is a valuable achievement.
Ms. Kochanova expressed confidence that young Belarusians are interested in the life of their country, “Today’s youth is more politicised than my generation. We probably didn’t think about what was happening in the country, because we lived and didn’t notice the changes. But over time, as the world began to change, we began to realise how important each person’s voice is.”
“There are many countries in the world that have lost their sovereignty and independence. Many states have disappeared from the world map,” she added.
According to the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, today it is important to understand how young people see Belarus’ future. It is our task to preserve unity so that the country remains peaceful in its foreign policy and calm and harmony reign inside.
