KGB Chairman reported on detention of Ukrainian spy and two recruited Belarusians
The Chairman of the National Security Committee, Ivan Tertel, informed that a Ukrainian agent and Belarusian citizens had been detained; the latter were sending data to Ukraine’s military intelligence
“A citizen of Ukraine was routed through Poland to our territory in one of the border areas. He created an agent network and recruited our citizens who were collecting classified data about the activities of our Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies, and other information that constitutes a state secret. Accordingly, they were detained and brought to criminal responsibility. An investigation is underway," Mr. Tertel said.
At present, intensification of the agent intelligence on the part of Ukrainian foreign intelligence services is registered, and the situation in the southern direction is getting complicated – through no fault of Belarus.
“We observe intensification of intelligence by the Ukrainian foreign secretive services and see – based on the information observed – that the situation in the region is becoming more complicated. This is not the fault of the Republic of Belarus. Sadly, the situation is very serious in our southern direction: virtually every day we see an increase in intelligence activity from the Ukrainian territory, and daily attempts to violate the airspace of Belarus are registered,” the Chairman of the National Security Committee noted.
Mr. Tertel added, “We try to understand each case in a human way. There are times when, having sorted it out, and already as part of a gesture of goodwill, we allow these citizens to leave for the neighbouring territory. At the same time, there are cases that I have mentioned. A criminal case has been opened for espionage, for treason of the state, and an investigation is underway. Provocations against our border guards at the state border occur constantly: threats of the use of weapons, insults, other acts that do not correspond to a high level of military personnel in any state are registered virtually on a daily basis.”
