Guterres: developing countries need help combating climate change
Developed countries should provide emerging economies with more support to combat climate change, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, TASS reports
Addressing world leaders at the World Climate Action Summit (COP29) in Baku, Guterres called for developed countries to pool their capabilities to provide emerging economies with technology and financial aid to enable climate action. He added that G20 countries must act as leaders in combating climate change.
According to the UN Secretary General, developing nations face multiple challenges, including cuts to government funding, natural disasters, and foreign debt service, so they lack financial resources needed to adapt to climate change. He reminded that out of every dollar invested into clean energy worldwide in 2023, only 15 cents were supplied by emerging economies.
Guterres also pointed out that in order to effectively distribute finances needed to combat the global climate change, a new deal is needed that would align with modern realities and accommodate the needs of developing nations. “COP29 must tear down the walls of climate finance. Developing countries must not leave Baku empty-handed,” he said.
