Genocide of Belarusian nation under investigation
More than 160 previously unknown mass graves have so far been examined as part of the criminal case on the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War and in the post-war period – as informed by Prosecutor General Andrei Shved
“The investigation of the case on the genocide of the Belarusian people, the BSSR population during the Great Patriotic War is actively progressing. We’ve already inspected 163 new, previously unknown places of mass burial of our citizens. There will be more than 200 such places in total,” Mr. Shved said.
The Prosecutor General added that scales of the tragedy are truly horrifying. Remains of tens of thousands of victims of the genocide are discovered. Works near Gomel have recently been launched and, as prosecutors consider, around 17,000-30,000 civilians were killed there during the Great Patriotic War.
In turn, in the Shklov District, a previously unknown burial place was discovered as well and, according to the official, works will start in this area soon. “Thousands of victims are expected to be discovered – near Bobruisk, Vitebsk and some other places. Search activities are in full swing near Minsk and the village of Kopishche. At least, five or even ten previously unknown mass graves of 15,000 or more Minskers and Red Army soldiers killed from 1941-1943 are likely to be found there,” Mr. Shved said.
