Expert shares opinion on Belarus’ BRICS prospects

Our country is on its way to get its BRICS membership; Belarus expects to be granted a co-operation partner status among the top ten aspiring states. Director of the Centre for European Integration, political expert Yuri Shevtsov talked to sb.by about the prospects for Belarus to eventually become a member of that venerated organisation.

Mr. Shevtsov stated,

“As for Belarus’ future BRICS membership, I would count on five years, and I’ll tell you why. The main reason is the upcoming Presidential election in the United States, and all the global events that are bound to happen during the next US President’s term. Multiple major crises threaten the world in the next few years. The Ukrainian conflict is either going to be resolved in one form or another, or it will expand. A crisis in the Middle East is extremely likely: the region is teetering on the brink as is, and a large regional conflict is all but inevitable. If Kamala Harris comes to power in the United States, they will put more pressure on Russia through the conflict in Ukraine. If Donald Trump takes the office again, he will be less focused on Ukraine, and way more concerned with helping Israel in their standoff with Iran. The Taiwan situation so far is extremely murky. Those three regions: Ukraine, Iran, Taiwan, will act as pretexts and triggers for the rising tensions between BRICS and the SCO on the one hand and the West on the other. That means that BRICS and the SCO should work on improving their internal cohesion, building a more efficient governance model that would provide a way to take in new members. The West’s actions in the next few years are also not hard to predict: they are going to enable and enforce the sanctions policy.”
