Expert on why poll shows 80+ percent trust in Lukashenko among Belarusians

PhD in Economics, analyst Georgy Grits commented on the recent Sustainable Development Factors poll results, according to which more than 80 percent of respondents trust the Head of State. The expert emphasised that people’s votes are often guided by a sense of personal security, the safety of their families and the opportunity to live under the peaceful sky.

“If we look at the situation developing around Belarus, then we can see that people's interests come first in the country, and certain geopolitical interests are behind them. If we proceed from the interests of an ordinary person, then they can easily be listed: an opportunity to ensure a decent existence for the family, the peaceful sky above heads, and confidence in the future. No matter how they try to classify Belarusians as co-aggressors in the Ukrainian conflict, this is just a far-fetched statement. After all, the future belongs to traditional values, the preservation of which is given special attention in Belarus. These include traditional relationships, respect for elders, and social guarantees. Our state is a state for people, and all these projects, theses and ideas are now associated with the President,” the expert noted.

In addition, the poll respondents were asked to answer the question on how they see the economic situation in the country in a year. 75.8 percent of those questioned said ‘it will remain the same or improve’. Mr. Grits agreed with that opinion and expressed confidence that the economic situation in Belarus would become even better.

“I am sure that common sense will reign after all,” the expert said. “We already see the steps that the US President-elect Donald Trump took even before the inauguration in terms of resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The situation can no longer remain like that, as there is a violation of all international norms and principles of free trade. Therefore, I believe that the situation in the world and in our country will improve, and this trend will be guided by an increase in the subjectivity of the Republic of Belarus in such international organisations as BRICS, SCO, EAEU, and the Union State. The troubled times, when everyone is on their own, are coming to an end, and this will be a contrast to the crazy sanctions policy on the part of the G7 countries and the collective West. Most of the states that are shaping the economic agenda and the dynamics of global economic growth today understand that the principles of adherence to international law, multipolarity – which are adhered to by both the Republic of Belarus and is President – are a priority.”
