Expert on why NATO asserts it ensures global security

The heads of state and government of 32 allied countries, leaders of the alliance's partners in the Indo-Pacific region (Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, as well as NATO partners Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia (on the issue of concluding a peace treaty between them) have been invited to the Washington NATO Forum which is being held on July 9th-11th. In addition, representatives of Israel and Arab countries have arrived as well, and this may cause tension due to disagreements in the US position on the Gaza Strip conflict. In his talk with sb.by, military expert Igor Chibisov explained why the alliance is trying to manage security issues around the globe.

“There are three main regions of military activity: East European, Middle Eastern and Indo-Pacific. The danger is that a third world war may be unleashed in any of them. It can probably be nuclear, which means that there will be no winners as a result,” the expert noted.

As explained by Mr. Chibisov, the alliance's partners in the Indo-Pacific region – Australia, South Korea, Japan and others – are opposed to the most important rival of the United States: China. “Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia have their own relations with Russia, and Israel is a strategic partner of the United States in the Middle East. It is clear that the United States and the European Union have launched a political offensive in the South Caucasus, but the success of the West in spreading its influence in this area will depend on how effectively it can solve regional problems. For example, the United States and the European Union are unlikely to be able to help Tbilisi regain control of Abkhazia and South Ossetia or force Azerbaijan to sign a peace treaty with Armenia on terms that are not favourable enough for Baku,” he said.

The expert continued, “Western politicians say that the reason why NATO was founded in 1949 and continues to exist is Russia and other enemies of the ‘free world’. Apart from the Russian Federation, these ‘rivals’ include China, Iran and the DPRK. All these countries are surrounded by NATO military bases. As the alliance asserts, it is trying to ensure security around the world. Given that there are more than eight hundred such military bases, the entire planet is envisaged in the NATO area of responsibility. This organisation ascribes to itself the functions of ensuring global security, which contradicts the norms of the international legal order under the auspices of the United Nations.”

According to Mr. Chibisov, NATO's goals and objectives will not change conceptually: it will remain an obedient military instrument in the hands of the United States. “With the help of NATO, Washington will try to maintain its hegemony in the world. In the future, the alliance is likely to throw all its forces at weakening and defeating China, and all NATO forces and means — political, economic and hybrid – will be used for this purpose. In this struggle, the West uses all methods, even the dirtiest ones, including terrorist organisations,” he stressed.

“The West can no longer defend its own power in the world by political and economic means, so it only has a military opportunity to ensure a well-fed life for the so-called golden billion at the expense of other countries and peoples,” the expert concluded.
