Expert explains Truss’ victory in UK PM election
Former British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has won the UK Prime Minister election thanks to populist rhetoric – as noted by political scientist Aleksei Belyaev during his talk with ONT TV channel
81,326 ordinary members of the Conservative Party voted for the candidacy of 47-year-old Liz Truss. Her rival, 42-year-old former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, received 60,399 votes. On September 6th, Truss replaces Boris Johnson and forms a new government.
“Liz Truss was noted for declaring the possibility of using nuclear weapons. That is, she certainly belongs to the hawks of the irresponsible wing. Everyone understands perfectly well that the use of nuclear weapons is the activation of the apocalypse button for all mankind. This is a populist statement, designed to temporarily raise one’s shares among voters,” the expert drew attention.
According to the political analyst, relations between Britain and China will only worsen under Liz Truss.
“The confrontational component will intensify even more. Truss has already made a number of high-profile statements, saying that in addition to Russia, which is seen as the main enemy of Great Britain, China will also be included in this list. This will not add stability to the United Kingdom but will make it a more prominent ally of the United States,” Aleksei Belyaev concluded.
