Expert: all conditions created in Belarus to protect personal data in digital environment
There is a struggle for personal data in the world – as stated by the Director of the National Personal Data Protection Centre of the Republic of Belarus, Andrei Gaev, at today’s press conference at the National Press Centre
“There is a struggle for personal data in the world. The biggest data leak to date happened recently, exposing 26 billion personal records. The more life goes digital, on the one hand, the harder it is to locate a person, as there is no direct face-to-face interaction, and, on the other hand, additional means appear for using personal data for illegal purposes.”
Andrei Gaev believes that big data and artificial intelligence technologies accelerate these processes.
“Today, it is often not even necessary to obtain deeper personal data in the form of, for example, biometric information. It is enough to collect photos of a person and a sample of his voice, to create a digital portrait of him. We already have trouble distinguishing fake news from real news. Therefore, experts today call disinformation the main threat to humanity.”
The state strives to create conditions for a person to feel safe enough in a constantly evolving environment. The topic of personal data protection has been reinforced by constitutional provisions in our country and is continued and developed in other important and fundamental documents. Thus, last year, the topic of personal data protection was reflected in the concept of the legal policy of Belarus, in a number of decrees on cybersecurity, on measures to counteract unauthorised payment transactions, and other acts.
