European Parliament calls for start of Moldova’s EU accession talks
Members of the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the start of the negotiation process between the European Union and Moldova on the issue of the country’s entry into the association, with the voting taking place within the framework of the EP plenary session in Strasbourg, TASS reports
The text of the adopted document reads, “The European Parliament reiterates its call on the European Commission and the European Council to start EU accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova by the end of 2023.”
According to MEPs, the Moldovan authorities have already shown ‘the determination and ability’ to fulfil the requirements put forward by the European Commission. The country’s accession to the EU was called a ‘geostrategic investment’ in strengthening Europe.
It is noted that for Moldova’s membership to truly become an investment, Chisinau must continue reforms across a range of areas. At the same time, it is clarified that this must be done not only for the sake of the country joining the union, ‘but also for the sake of a noticeable improvement in the quality of life of citizens’.
