EU supplied 1 million shells to Ukraine with 8.5 months’ delay

Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs who is retiring on December 1st, reported that the European Union has ‘just met’ their pledge to supply Kiev with 1 million artillery rounds, made in February 2023. Borrell announced that a blog post published on the EU Diplomatic Service website, TASS reports.

“We have […] just met our pledge to provide Ukraine with 1 million rounds of ammunition, and by the end of winter, we will have trained 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers,” he wrote. Earlier, Borrell reported that the European countries have trained 60,000 AFU servicemen by early October.

In February 2023, Borrell and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen committed to provide Ukraine with 1 million artillery shells in 12 months, i.e. by March 2024. The delay, therefore, was about 8.5 months long. On top of using their own ammo stockpiles to fulfil their promise, the EU countries were also replenishing their reserves and buying artillery rounds all over the world.
