EU, Japan announced conclusion of strategic and defence partnership

The European Union and Japan have announced the launch of strategic and defence partnership – as announced by EU High Representative Josep Borrell at a recent press conference in Tokyo, TASS reports

"We are announcing the conclusion of the EU-Japan strategic and defence partnership, which is the first co-operation programme of the kind so far signed by the European Union and a country in the Asia-Pacific region," Mr. Borrell said.

In turn, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya noted that the agreement covers the sphere of defence and security.

In addition, the parties signed an agreement on strategic partnership.
