Estonia didn’t support initiative to immediately demolish Bronze Soldier monument
The Riigikogu (Parliament) of Estonia rejected a bill for the immediate demolition of all ‘red monuments’ that were erected under Soviet rule, including the Bronze Soldier – a monument to Soviet soldiers in Tallinn, TASS reports
The bill to demolish the ‘red monuments’ was initiated by the faction of the opposition Conservative People’s Party. As the national state television and radio portal ERR reported, the explanatory note to the bill indicated that the transfer of the Bronze Soldier monument from Tallinn’s centre to the Military Cemetery did not change anything.
The initiative of the Conservative People’s Party stipulated that the Riigikogu would submit a proposal for the demolition of Soviet monuments to the government. However, the deputies did not support this proposal. It is reported that 14 members of the Estonian parliament voted in favour, 54 voted against, and 21 members abstained.
