Deputy on European Parliament resolution on political prisoners in Belarus
Deputy of the House of Representatives of Belarus’ National Assembly Viktor Azarenok described the resolution of the European Parliament – adopted on September 19th, 2024, on the plight of political prisoners in Belarus – as an unsuccessful attempt by the new composition of the European Parliament to create the appearance of active work
According to him, at its core, the document is a set of formulations already known and constantly used in relation to Belarus. Viktor Azarenok is convinced that this resolution has nothing to do with reality.
“We are facing an unsuccessful attempt to create the appearance of active and concrete work by the new composition of the European Parliament. Instead of understanding the real situation, our European colleagues chose the path of their predecessors and once again copied the already hackneyed formulations that have nothing to do with reality: some ‘political prisoners’. The purpose of this step is to discredit the upcoming presidential elections in Belarus in 2025, as well as to provide a justification for the introduction of new ‘sanctions’ by the European Union, which, actually, are illegal unilateral coercive measures,” the MP explained.
Viktor Azarenok also expressed confidence that any response from Belarus on this issue will be interpreted by the European Parliament in a way that deliberately discredits our country, in line with the European political agenda.
“The main purpose of all that is happening is to destroy Belarus. We don’t have time to engage in demagoguery. Our goal is to move forward in the way that is determined by our elected Head of State. Belarus is a sovereign country, which means Belarusians will make their own choice,” the deputy underlined.
