Denis Lazavik, Magnus Carlsen in the lead at Champions Chess Tour Finals in Oslo

For the second year in a row, Belarusian chess player Denis Lazavik qualified for the final stage of the most prestigious fast chess tournament in the world, the Champions Chess Tour. This year, the finals take place in Oslo and feature chess stars like Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer, and Levon Aronian.

At age 18, Denis Lazavik from Minsk is the youngest of them all, but that didn’t stop him from making huge waves on the first day of the competition by beating Vachier-Lagrave, Keymer, and Firouzja back-to-back, earning the maximum number of points. Only a legend like Magnus Carlsen could get the same result, so those two are now leading the tournament ranking!

The qualification rules say the two best players after the round robin go to the final stage directly. Those who take places 3 to 6 have to play at the double elimination stage, while the two players at the bottom are eliminated. The two winners of the double elimination stage go on to join the round robin winners in the final single elimination tournament that consists of four matches that determine the tour champion and the winner of the Champions Chess Tour-2024 prize money: $500,000.
