Chronic fatigue syndrome: causes and symptoms

The chronic fatigue syndrome is a condition that can make your quality of life significantly worse: sometimes, you don’t even have the energy to get out of bed. The reasons for that can be hard to understand. Psychologist Tatiana Kudrina explained the causes and the symptoms of chronic fatigue.

The difference between general tiredness and the chronic fatigue syndrome, according to Ms. Kudrina, is that the latter leaves you tired even after a good, long rest. Which symptoms may signal the chronic fatigue syndrome?

“Which symptoms may signal the chronic fatigue syndrome? Not feeling well-rested even after a good night of sleep. Frequent headaches, or pulsing in the temples that can re-occur for no apparent reason. Drowsiness at any time of day; trouble falling asleep even after a long day of physical labour, insomnia, irritability without a good cause, low mood, again, not caused by anything in particular. Here, we can also list problems with cognition, memory, focus, low energy, feeling of fatigue after just a short period of work, weakness, apathy, depression, anxiety, unfounded fears, muscle atony, low immunity, repeated flu or cold episodes, frequent chronic condition flare-ups,” she said.

As the psychologist explained, these symptoms generally manifest in groups, not one-by-one.

“Major causes for the chronic fatigue syndrome are lack of open fresh air, sedentary lifestyle, frequent stresses, alcohol abuse, biological rhythm changes, and chronic pathologies. Mostly, this syndrome affects residents of big cities: they are the ones who suffer from the hustle, the pollution, the noise, psychological issues, constant depression, the pressure, bad thoughts, and low mood. All that overloads the nervous system that becomes unable to handle the stress, leading to the constant feeling of fatigue,” said the expert.

Ms. Kudrina also revealed which doctors you should consult to alleviate or cure the chronic fatigue syndrome.

“Psychologists, neurologists, immunologists, endocrinologists, general physicians and psychotherapists can all help. Only a specialist doctor can diagnose that syndrome after running all the tests. Treating the chronic fatigue syndrome requires a holistic approach from multiple specialists. You should not try to do it on your own: you’re just going to exhaust your strength and energy, and the consequences can be serious,” she concluded.
