Estonia recorded increase in crime due to lack of money among population

Estonia’s Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs Liisa-Ly Pakosta said that the increase in crime in Estonia is related to the deterioration of the socio-economic situation of the population, TASS reports

According to Liisa-Ly Pakosta, ‘analysts attribute the increase in crime in Estonia primarily to the worsening socio-economic situation’. She added that there has also been an increase in the number of people who say they ‘resort to theft because they otherwise lack the money to buy food and essential goods’.

The official noted that crime rates in Estonia have been declining for over a decade, but then started to grow. According to her, reported crimes grew by about 4 percent in 2023, while the biggest increase, by 25 percent, was seen in 2024.
