Chibisov: Belarus is Russia’s only ally in western direction

In connection with the aggravation of the military situation on the western borders of the Union State, Belarus and Russia have deployed a regional group of forces. As President Aleksandr Lukashenko noted, everything is happening in line with the Union State documents: if the level of threat reaches a critical point, as it is nowadays, then for the security of both countries, a joint group of forces is activated in the corresponding region. Military analyst Igor Chibisov shared with us his opinion on this issue.

“Military-technical co-operation is the most important area of interaction between Belarus and Russia. In the 25 years of the existence of the Union State, neither Minsk nor Moscow has ever called into question the need to strengthen ties in the field of joint defence against external threats. Belarus is Russia’s only ally in the western direction, which is of key importance for it both strategically and tactically. Moreover, in accordance with the obligations under the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and bilateral agreements, our countries intend to jointly respond to threats directed against them. At the same time, it should be noted that Belarus does not consider any of the countries as an adversary. Moreover, the agreement on military co-operation between Belarus and Russia contains a provision on the exclusively defensive nature of the joint military doctrine of the allied states that have established a regional security system,” Igor Chibisov noted.
