Borrell: EU countries trained almost 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers and supplied 30bn Euros of weapons to Kiev
The European Union and its member states have provided Kiev with ammunition and weapons worth approximately 30bn Euros and trained almost 40,000 soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the conflict with Russia – as stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, TASS reports with reference to Spain’s El Pais newspaper
"The EU and its member states have provided unprecedented economic, humanitarian and military support, supplying Ukraine with ammunition and weapons worth almost 30bn Euros and training almost 40,000 Ukrainian soldiers on EU territory," the head of European diplomacy said, adding that the conflict had contributed to strengthening ‘transatlantic unity’.
"However, we were often too slow to supply the necessary weapons to Ukraine and acted only when it seemed that Russia could come forward," Mr. Borrell said. “With an eye to the future, we need a paradigm shift: we must move from supporting Ukraine ‘for as long as it is needed’ to a commitment to do ‘whatever it is necessary’ to ensure that it achieves victory."
