Belarusian wrestlers won 7 medals at 2024 European Championships in Romania
Belarusian wrestlers have won seven medals at the 2024 European Wrestling Championships in Bucharest, Romania, BelTA reports
On the final day of the championship, there was only one medal match involving a Belarusian wrestler: Dzianis Khramiankou wrestled for the bronze in the men's 125kg freestyle event. The day before, the Belarusian defeated Magomedgadzhi Nurasulov from Serbia and Alikhan Zhabrailov from Russia, then lost to Georgian Geno Petriashvili in the semi-finals, after which he reached the bronze medal match. On February 18th, Khramiankou faced Bulgarian Alen Khubulov, who eventually left the mat as the winner (3:0). Belarusian Aliaksandr Hushtyn (up to 97kg) also had a chance to become a bronze medallist of the continental forum yesterday, but in the medal match the Belarusian lost to Ibrahim Ciftci from Türkiye (5:6).
Thus, at the continental forum in Romania, representatives of the Belarusian delegation won seven awards: two gold, one silver and four bronze medals. In women's wrestling, Vanesa Kaladzinskaya (up to 53kg) and Iryna Kurachkina (up to 57kg) became the winners of the tournament, while Alesia Hetmanava (up to 59kg) and Veranika Ivanova (up to 62kg) took third place. Among the Greco-Roman wrestlers, bronze went to Kiryl Maskevich (up to 87kg) and Abubakar Khaslakhanau (up to 97kg). In the freestyle wrestling, Magomedkhabib Kadimagomedov (up to 79kg) climbed to the second step of the podium.
In total, the 2024 European Championships in Bucharest brought together more than 500 athletes from 38 countries, including 28 Belarusian wrestlers. Traditionally, the athletes competed for 30 sets of awards (10 each in Greco-Roman, freestyle and women's wrestling). The next major start for wrestlers from all over the continent will be the 2024 European Olympic Qualifier in Baku in early April, where licences for the 2024 Olympic Games will be at stake. By now, Belarusians Vanesa Kaladzinskaya and Abubakar Khaslakhanau have won tickets to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
