Belarus protested to Ambassador of Japan over activities of his country’s spy

Japanese Ambassador Hiroyuki Yamamoto was summoned to Belarus’ Foreign Ministry. A protest was lodged in connection with the espionage activities of a recently detained Japanese citizen on the territory of Belarus, which damaged the country’s security, sb.by reports with reference to the Foreign Ministry’s press service

At the moment, the investigation of this case is at its final stage, the degree of responsibility for the crimes committed will be determined by the court in full accordance with Belarusian legislation.

As the Belarusian Foreign Ministry stressed, the demands publicly stated by the Japanese side to hide this crime from the public and not to show it in the media have been left without consideration due to their illegality. In this context, the protest over the demonstration of a film revealing to society the criminal nature of the acts of a Japanese citizen looks all the more ridiculous.

"All investigative procedures were carried out in full compliance with Belarusian legislation and all international legal norms. Consular access was provided to the detainee, the comfortable conditions of his detention are known to the Japanese side, he is provided with protection, voluntarily co-operates with the investigation and contacts the media. At the same time, we do not refuse further contacts with the Japanese side in this case. We emphasise the unacceptability of any actions by foreign intelligence services that violate the sovereignty of our country," the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
