Belarus’ Energy Ministry said Lithuania’s information about BelNPP is targeted action to discredit the project

The Lithuanian side launched another information campaign aimed at creating a negative attitude towards the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP) by inflating the imaginary threat of the plant to the international community – as reported by the Belarusian Energy Ministry in its Telegram channel

According to the energy department, unconfirmed ‘frightening’ information about its construction is being cited, the purpose of which is to stir up public opinion, politicise the situation, and discredit our country on the world stage.

“The safety of the systems and equipment of the BelNPP has been and remains an absolute priority at all stages of the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant. Technologies to ensure nuclear and radiation safety used in the framework of the project are successfully used in other countries and have proven their reliability and efficiency,” the Ministry of Energy informed.

It is noted that in order to exclude possible deviations in the operation of technological systems and equipment at nuclear power plants, scheduled repairs are carried out annually, “In 2022, it was also held at the BelNPP. All the works were conducted in the normal mode, in full compliance with the requirements of the supervisory authorities and international standards, as reported repeatedly. In fulfilment of its international obligations, Belarus not only informed neighbouring countries about the repair works, but also answered the questions received. Everything was done openly and transparently.”

In the course of the scheduled repairs, as envisaged by the relevant programme, metal control of equipment and pipelines was carried out at the first power unit, the Energy Ministry underlined, “Based on the results of the diagnostics, not a single defect was identified that poses a threat to nuclear and radiation safety, and even more so, requiring the dismantling of the reactor.”

The information launched about the BelNPP is another stuffing, which was purposefully made right now, at the final stage of the construction of the facility, the Ministry said.

“While attempts of ‘high-profile disclosures’ are being made outside our country, the BelNPP specialists continue a lot of painstaking work to prepare for the commissioning of the second power unit. Very soon, a chain reaction will be launched in its reactor, after which the reactor plant will be brought to a minimum controlled power level and the unit will be connected to the network. Then the stage of pilot operation and complex tests will follow,” the Ministry of Energy concluded.
