Argentina’s President offers to hold summit of Latin American countries in support of Ukraine
The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, announced his desire to hold a summit of Latin American countries in support of Ukraine in 2024, TASS reports
The politician told the Financial Times newspaper about his intention, but did not disclose the details of the planned event. Javier Milei emphasised that he prioritises alliances with ‘countries defending freedom’, including the United States, Israel and Ukraine.
According to the newspaper, the rhetoric of the president of Argentina differs sharply from the course pursued by the leaders of other countries in the region, such as President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Javier Milei assumed the highest state post of Argentina on December 10th, 2023. The politician has repeatedly stated that he will not promote interstate relations with Brazil, China and the Russian Federation due to disagreement with the policies of these states, but at the same time claimed that he would not prevent private companies from doing business with them. On November 30th, 2023, his adviser and future Foreign Minister Diana Mondino announced that Argentina would not join BRICS, where the country was admitted following the results of the summit held in August.
