Anfimov: election of Belarus’ President of great interest within CIS

The Belarusian election campaign is of great interest within the Commonwealth of Independent States – as noted by Leonid Anfimov who heads the CIS observer mission headquarters, at a meeting with the Supreme Court leadership today

“We are interested in the election being held constructively, in a normal, law-abiding manner, without any excesses and shocks,” Mr. Anfimoov stated. “Actually, the year 2020 taught us a lot, and I think that there is unlikely to be a repeat of what happened back then: there is no ground for that. Everything is being done in Belarus to ensure that the country develops in the right direction and maintains the stability in society, the economy, and the social sphere. The country has overcome unprecedented sanctions. It has not only managed to stand its ground, but also to show good results in its economic and social development. I think people see and appreciate this.”

Forty long-term CIS observers participate in the monitoring of the Presidential election in Belarus, and they actually represent the mission headquarters headed by Mr. Anfimov. Meanwhile, it is expected that the CIS observer mission will number more than 300 people, including representatives of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the Standing Committee of the Union State, and the CIS Executive Committee.

“This is an unprecedented figure, and it means that the election of the President of the Republic of Belarus is of great interest to the entire Commonwealth," Mr. Anfimov stressed.
