Ambrazevich at UN: sustainable peace is main condition for sustainable development

Sustainable development is possible only where sustainable peace is established. Peace is sustainable when the concerns of each participant are taken into account and a balance of interests is observed, satisfying all and everyone in a worthy and acceptable way – as stated by Belarus’ Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Ambrazevich during the general debate at the ministerial segment of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development of the UN Economic and Social Council in New York.

The Deputy Minister noted that this forum on sustainable development is taking place at a time of the most acute crisis of global security and confidence, “The crisis revealed the desire of individual players to promote their own interests to the detriment of the interests of others. The response of those who disagree with this approach gave rise to the ensuing confrontation, the degradation of the architecture of international security and the system of international law. All this threatens not only the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also the existence of humanity itself.”

In order to return the international community to the issues of development and creation, it is necessary to agree on the conditions for sustainable peace as soon as possible.

“Without this, any initiative to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs is doomed to failure,” Yuri Ambrazevich stressed.
