Ambassador: Belarusian-German co-operation on memorial issues continues
Despite the incidents that have taken place this year, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Germany, Denis Sidorenko, believes the joint Belarusian-German work aimed at preservation of the memory of military tragedies will continue
During his visit to Trostenets memorial complex, the diplomat said, “The Belarusian people’s tragedy and victims during WWII should be perceived and discussed in the right historical context. If we manage to stay in this perspective, then we will be able to continue implementing memorial projects with our partners, including here in Trostenets.”
According to Mr. Sidorenko, Belarus has many partners in Germany who – despite political difficulties – continue to stay in contact with the country and prepare new ideas and projects: i.e. creation of a historical workshop in Minsk and a relevant information centre.
Commenting on the demolition of monuments in some European states, the Ambassador of Belarus called such phenomena a very dangerous practice that is destroying relations between peoples. "In Germany, thank God, there is nothing of the kind. As for protection and servicing of Soviet memorials, the authorities of this country are making every effort," Mr. Sidorenko added.
