Air blockade
Airlines are either avoiding Ukrainian airspace or ramping up security measures
KLM and Emirates are no longer flying to Ukraine. Other carriers are continuing to fly but there are growing worries about insurance coverage and risk assessments, something that forced the country’s flag carrier to send some aircraft to the EU.The Dutch airline said its move was in response to travel advice adjusted to code red from the Netherlands and an extensive safety analysis. An Emirates spokesperson said safety of operations is ‘always our top priority’.
Insurers are also pulling out of the country. Aircraft lessors are demanding that jets be returned to the EU after insurance companies announced that, from February 14th, they would no longer insure planes flying over Ukraine, according to SkyUp Airlines.
Aviation news warned that Ukraine could soon become a ‘no-fly zone’ due to the cancellation of commercial flights in Ukraine. Unless an agreement is made between the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure and international insurers and airlines, Ukraine will gradually be closed to air traffic.
