UN: number of refugees from Sudan could exceed 800,000
Most likely, the number of refugees who may leave Sudan soon will exceed 800,000 – as noted by UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees (Operations) Raouf Mazou, TASS reports with reference to Reuters
Mazou said that such a forecast was made after consultations with all ‘concerned governments and partners’.
“We’ve arrived at a planning figure of 815,000 people that may flee into the seven neighbouring countries,” he stressed.
Mazou explained that the estimate includes 580,000 Sudanese, as well as citizens living there who had previously arrived in the country from other states.
The UN representative added that 73,000 people have already left Sudan for neighbouring countries: Egypt, Libya, Chad, Central African Republic, Eritrea, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
