Swiss expert: if US authorities does not get hot wars, they use sanctions

If the United States does not get a hot war in a country, it imposes sanctions against it – as noted by founder of the Geneva Institute for Multipolarity (Switzerland) Guy Mettan in his talk with the STV TV channel

The expert noted that he is categorically against sanctions, “They can harm, kill. If you remember the case in Iraq in the 1990s, when 500,000 children died as a direct consequence of the imposed restrictions. So we can’t agree with unilateral sanctions that are not approved by the UN. In the case of Belarus, these sanctions were not approved by the General Assembly. Western countries, mainly America, perceive sanctions as a kind of war. They try to get hot wars, bombings, invasions, like in Iraq, Syria, Libya. When they don’t get that, they wage a cold war through sanctions.”

According to Mr. Mettan, this is a way of denying diplomacy, discussion, negotiations.

“We can only regret it. We must fight against this way of acting,” said Mr. Mettan.

Asked why international organisations do not openly oppose such a US policy, the expert recalled that on October 30th, the UN General Assembly voted to end economic, commercial, financial embargo against Cuba, which has been under sanctions for 65 years. Only two countries opposed it: the United States and Israel. Moldova abstained at the same time. The absolute majority of states – 187 – were in favour of the cancellation, but in reality it did not change anything. As Mr. Mettan explained, this is just an advisory vote, which has no effect.

Switzerland has been neutral on a wide variety of issues for a long time. However, Bern joined the sanctions against Belarus and Russia.

“It is a big blow to Swiss neutrality and sovereignty, but we were forced to do it under pressure. We do not have an ability to freely import or export goods, because we do not have a sea, we don’t have a harbour, and so half of our economy depends on relations with our neighbours. In addition, if you look at the financial system, which is quite strong in Switzerland, our banks use the US Dollar. So the Swiss economy would have collapsed without using this currency,” Mr. Mettan commented on the situation.

The expert added that in about a year, the country will hold a referendum asking to return to a new hard neutrality.

“And I am quite optimistic that the majority of Swiss citizens will vote in favour of neutrality,” he said.
