Volkswagen workforce ready to strike against layoffs

The leading German trade union, IG Metall, announced that the Volkswagen staff is ready to go on strike come December to protest against mass layoffs and factory closures, RIA Novosti reports

The union’s chief spokesperson, Thorsten Gröger, stated that “We made our common concept known at the tariff negotiations and went on the offensive; the company agreed to start talks on that basis, but they say the option for factory closures and mass layoffs remains on the table.”

“At all factories, workers are ready for conflict. How long and how severe it will be, depends on Volkswagen and their behaviour at the negotiating table,” he added.

The next round of tariff negotiations is scheduled for December 9th; the union is planning to exert pressure on the company via strikes ahead of that date.
