In her talk with sb.by, the doctor enumerated the top five foods for brain health: avocado, salmon, bananas, walnuts, and sauerkraut. “They contain vitamins A, E, B, C, K, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, fibre, Omega-3, and probiotics which are necessary for the effective brain function. Beans are known to have beneficial effects on the brain: they contain substances that stabilise connections between neurons,” she explained.

Ms. Starkova warned that a deficiency of folate, or vitamin B9, can lead to the rapid development of dementia, “Folate is found in spinach, white cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli. Dried basil, wakame algae, and mash are also rich in folate.”

The expert emphasised that the lack of B12 may lead to the death of neurons and nerve cells, which will negatively affect the work of the brain, “Beef liver is the B12 content champion. This vitamin is also present in seafood and dairy products (cheeses, yogurt, milk).”

As noted by Ms. Starkova, buckwheat is one of the most useful cereals, it is an important source of protein. “Buckwheat porridge helps increase brain activity,” she said.

Honeysuckle berries are also very useful for the brain. The doctor noted, “They contain a large amount of flavonoids (plant pigments) that improve brain activity and memory, which is especially important for the elderly.”
