Ryzhenkov: Belarus supports Russian push for BRICS settlement system

The Republic of Belarus supports the Russian initiative to create a settlement system for BRICS, said Belarus’ Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov in his interview with RIA Novosti

“We are very positive about the steps taken by the Russian Federation to establish such a system,” said the minister.

He pointed out that the subject of intra-BRICS finance and settlements was of great interest to Minsk.

“Because it’s time for us to have a couple of settlement methods not controlled by the collective West. The West uses these capabilities not so much to enforce sanctions onto those who lack democracy, but more as tools in unfair competition which is completely against the spirit of international organisations such as the UN, or the WTO. Those tools are used to stunt development of other countries and ensure continuing dominance of the West,” explained Mr. Ryzhenkov.

He added that even two or three systems like that being available would curb the Western appetites, making the BRICS countries and their partners, at the very least, confident in their ability to trade among themselves, “We would feel sure that our foreign trade depends only on fair competition, instead of political developments, or Western oligarchs’ interests.”

In general, the Foreign Minister noted that Minsk supports all the projects and ideas proposed by senior BRICS countries, “They all have their features, each country is working on some idea that ensures a synergy for the entire organisation. Some advocate strengthening financial development tools, some are into logistics, others – into digitalisation. All those issues are intimate and important to us.”

Mr. Ryzhenkov also pointed out that Belarus can be useful to BRICS when it comes to solving global food security issues, clarifying that, on top of being a net exporter of food, agricultural machinery, and fertilisers, our country is also ready to offer farming development technologies and competences to interested countries.

“We are ready to share it for free, unlike the Western countries which would never help anyone. Their objective is to syphon your resources out and sell you their products. They would never set up any production to make something their customers won’t buy from them tomorrow. Belarus does not operate like that: if we are partners, of course we would try and be useful for you in everything, expecting the same in return,” said the Belarus’ FM.

Mr. Ryzhenkov also added that Belarus can be useful to BRICS as a country that offers good transit opportunities along the EU-EAEU-China corridor.
