New pieces of ancient art discovered at excavation site in Pompeii
Archaeologists in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii have discovered an unusually tiny house with well-preserved frescoes of mythological scenes, Reuters reports
The dwelling, named the House of Phaedra in honour of the mythological queen of Athens, who is depicted on one of the wall paintings, sheds light on changing architectural styles in the 1st century AD, the Pompeii archaeological park said in a statement.
“Despite its small size, the house ‘strikes us for the high level of its wall decorations’, the statement said, noting they were of similar quality to much larger and more opulent homes near the new discovery, which lies in the centre of the site,” Reuters reports.
In addition to the frescoes with Phaedra and Hippolytus, other mythological scenes adorning the brightly coloured walls of the house depict a satyr and nymphs, as well as gods who, according to experts, could be Venus and Adonis.
