Media: Japan, India to use laser to destroy space debris
Start-ups from India and Japan are exploring the possibility of equipping artificial satellites with laser installations to destroy space debris in Earth orbit, TASS reports
According to Reuters, Tokyo-based Orbital Lasers and Indian robotics company InspeCity said they had agreed to jointly study using laser-equipped satellites to remove debris from orbit, to stop the rotation of space junk by vaporising small parts of its surface – making it easier for a servicing spacecraft to rendezvous.
As reported, the system will be demonstrated in space and made available to satellite operators by 2027.
