Belarus’ National Library opened exhibition celebrating Chinese New Year
The National Library’s Chinese Book Centre opened a themed book exhibition called New Year under the New Moon. It includes about 30 publications in Russian, Chinese, and English: books, periodicals, and illustrated albums, informed the library’s press service.
According to the Chinese calendar, the coming new year will be the year 4722, not 2025; it will last till February 16th, 2026. The National Library’s press service revealed some fascinating exhibits they have prepared for the celebration.
“The exposition invites readers to dive into the world of oriental fairy tales and learn a lot of new things not only about the Chinese New Year, but about China’s history, national holidays, and rituals as well. Illustrated albums called Chinese New Year Pictures, Chinese New Year Paintings tell us about New Year rituals. Books like Myths and Legends of China and Chinese Myths & Legends let us delve into myths and fables related to the coming of the new year. They tell the story of Nian, the magical monster who comes to Earth on the first day of the new year to eat people, and how the Chinese found out how to scare the monster away. Treatises called Calendar Customs and Rituals of East Asian Peoples. Annual Cycle and Calendar Customs and Rituals of East Asian Peoples. New Year reveal the features of New Year celebrations in China, Korea, and Japan. Information on the origins, evolution, contents, and differences between rituals used in various regions of China can be found in illustrated albums: Traditional Chinese Holidays in Pictures and History of Chinese Holidays.
The exact original name for the Chinese (or Lunar) New Year is the Spring Festival. From the ancient times, it has been the greatest and the longest celebration not only in China, but in the entire East Asia. Its starting date varies, because it falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice. So the next Chinese New Year will come on January 29th, 2025, and related celebrations will last till February 12th.
