Media: EU bin over 215m doses of COVID-19 vaccine worth €4bn

According to the Politico publication, the overproduction of vaccines, estimated at 1.5 billion doses, "has led to many of them ‘now lying in landfills across the continent’. In 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Brussels signed major contracts for the supply of 1.1 billion vaccine doses with the American company Pfizer and the German BioNTech. However, the number of these vaccines remained unclaimed.

The publication highlights that due to declining demand and problems with logistics the transfer of surplus vaccine doses to third countries has become problematic.
