Lukashenko to governors: we have to go through this period with dignity

After meeting his proxies on January 3rd, President Aleksandr Lukashenko followed on the subject of the electoral campaign during his meeting with heads of Minsk and regional executive committees

The Head of State pointed out that December and January have always been the hottest months for the authorities. After working hard all year, people wait for the New Year and Christmas to relax.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the holidays went by without incident, so now the Presidential election awaits us on January 26th.

“Thanks to the people who collected the signatures, we went through that stage without a hitch. Five Presidential candidates were registered. Now we are on the threshold of the Presidential election. The most active stage, the propaganda stage, started on January 1st. It’s a challenging time. We have to go through this period with dignity and with no law violations,” he said.

The Head of State explained he had invited governors to the meeting to talk to them about how the election should be set up.

“Electoral law violations are out of the question. We don’t need that at all, to be honest. We have to go through this period with dignity, so no dirt can be thrown at us from abroad, most of all. And so as not to spoil the mood domestically,” explained President Lukashenko.

He went on to reiterate that he won’t have time for campaigning due to his busy work schedule. He has international visits scheduled, including a visit to China.

“You can’t turn an invitation like that down, because it’s our country’s future. What do a meeting with Xi Jinping and a visit to China mean? They mean our future. A partnership with China is a great undertaking. So that means three or four days lost,” he elaborated.

The President also plans to take part in traditional domestic events during the propaganda period, “I just won’t have the time to set up and control my campaign. So my heartfelt request for you is to set it up to a highest standard. You have to organise, at no cost for your main work (because January is a key month for the economy; if we lose January, we won’t be able to catch up for the entire year), at absolutely no cost, meetings for candidates and their voters wherever they want, and support them. We have to make the election like a holiday.”

The Head of State also made a request to handle any arising transport issues, because the election takes place in winter, and to assist local election commissions.

“Because those garbage people are starting to pressure commission members and especially heads of commissions. It’s great no one is afraid, but you have to get involved. Get the law enforcement or the military involved if necessary, but maintain the order,” he instructed.
