Lukashenko: Belarusian specialists engaged in setting up power supply to Chernobyl station

The President of Belarus stated this at a meeting with the Defence Ministry leadership. This kind of work is necessary to maintain security at the facility after its energy supply was limited by the Ukrainian side.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said that he had discussed this problem with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone the day before and, as the Head of State noted, the Russian and Belarusian data coincide, “The Chernobyl station has been disconnected from the power supply. You understand perfectly well that the station itself produces electricity, but it also consumes much power in order to operate. True, the Chernobyl station has stopped its functioning there. There is a nuclear waste storage facility there, and the process needs cold water – at least for cooling. This means electricity – and there is no electricity.”

According to the President, reserve capacities are involved to solve the problem promptly. However, these are temporary capacities. Belarusian power engineers have already got down to establishing a permanent power supply.

“Tonight, last evening and in the morning, our specialists worked at the Chernobyl station (the Energy Minister was instructed to organise this work) to immediately ensure the power supply. We have a power line – preserved since Soviet times; it has been put into mothballs. It must be restored immediately. It will then be probably necessary to supply this electricity to a substation of the Chernobyl power plant through a temporary scheme to ensure the safety of the Chernobyl station in normal mode. This is because the emergency systems can work there for about a month or a month and a half. These are emergency ones, and if they become disconnected then another Fukushima will happen,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

In this regard, the President turned to the topic of the detected groups of mercenaries in the adjacent territory. “I am once again repeating: it is necessary to think ahead of all scenarios – by the military and border guards. Keep track of these mercenaries’ actions. We do not know why they are moving towards the Chernobyl station,” he said.
