The global forum – bringing together tens of thousands of delegates, including many heads of state and government – is held under the auspices of the United Nations.

In his speech, Aleksandr Lukashenko will outline Belarus’ national position on the climate change agenda and the measures that the international community should take to address the challenges arising in this area.

The President will also hold a number of meetings and negotiations with his foreign counterparts on the side-lines of the summit.

The UN Climate Change Conference, or Climate Summit, has been held annually since 1995 and brings together countries that are parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The previous global forum was held in late 2023 in Dubai (UAE) with the participation of representative delegations from more than 150 countries.

Talking to journalists, Belarus’ Ambassador to Azerbaijan Andrei Ravkov recalled Aleksandr Lukashenko’s state visit to this country in May 2024. A number of issues were discussed then, especially the trade-economic agenda of co-operation. Twelve areas have been worked out, which, both immediately and in the future, are designed to advance the relationship between the two countries to a higher level.

“There has been active work on these issues. In some places, the progress is very serious, in others it is still being worked out. Nevertheless, there is good movement across all twelve directions and there will be good results,” the Ambassador is confident.

He announced that a separate bilateral meeting between Aleksandr Lukashenko and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is planned in Baku on the side-lines of the summit, at which the heads of state will synchronise watches on the development of co-operation.

Andrei Ravkov also noted that the goal had previously been set to bring the bilateral trade to $1bn within the next two years. It is expected that by the end of this year, the parties will confidently overcome the bar of $500m in trade in goods and services, which is significantly higher than last year’s level.
