Lukashenko announced new serious conversation on flax industry

At today’s meeting in Shklov, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has announced a new serious conversation on the flax industry, BelTA reports

The Head of State said that he plans to return to this topic in the autumn, “We will talk about flax at a linen mill – doing that for the fourth time at my level. We have agreed to do this in autumn. The whole chain is there. I already told the minister a week ago that flax is a political crop, it is depicted on our coat of arms. It is actually not the reason, though… The demand for linen products is now slowly growing, and they are becoming fashionable. It [flax] is a blessing, it is our [asset].”

The President stated that there are still many shortcomings in this area – i.e. related to flax cultivation and processing with high-quality raw materials. Although there are scientific developments in this regard, and some farms in Belarus have already learned to cultivate flax at a high level.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also touched upon the issue of the work of flax mills. Some time ago they were modernised, but – as reported to the President – the upgrading is needed in some aspects.

"You should finally decide how many of these plants we need. Decide on the area where we will cultivate flax. We will then talk about linen mills, but we should make the most of these. Think over these issues seriously," the Belarusian leader said. “Let’s get engaged into the issue, it is a good piece [of work] – primarily for the Mogilev and Vitebsk regions. We need to consider these plans."
