Lukashenko: all principles and norms laid down in Constitution must work in practice

All the principles and norms laid down in the updated Constitution should work in practice – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko during a meeting with judges of the Constitutional Court. Starting the conversation, the Head of State immediately outlined his goal, recalling that the previous meeting in a similar format took place a long time ago and focused on the preparation of amendments to the Constitution.

“Extensive work has been carried out on the new version of the Basic Law, with the judges of the Constitutional Court also making their contribution. When drafting constitutional amendments, we set the task of strengthening Belarus’ sovereignty and independence, consolidating the system of state authorities that meets the requirements of the time and the traditional values inherent in our people. Subsequent events confirmed the timeliness of the adopted changes. However, the main thing is that all the principles and norms laid down in the Constitution must work in practice. This is the most important,” the President underlined.

According to the Belarusian leader, this also applies to the powers of the Constitutional Court.

“During the constitutional reform, they have been significantly expanded, including taking into account your proposals. I’d like to hear how the Constitutional Court is functioning today. Are the supreme body of constitutional control fulfilling its tasks in full?” the Head of State asked.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the Constitutional Court needs to take a clear leadership position in the issues of implementing the provisions of the Basic Law.

“Now it is important to be proactive, to be on the cutting edge of events, to stay ahead. In short, society should see the Constitutional Court in action. The effectiveness of protecting the constitutional order in our country depends on your activity,” the President asserted.
