Kochanova: older people want to be useful to Belarus

Older people want to meet, communicate, and be useful to Belarus, said Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, the President’s proxy in Minsk, Natalya Kochanova, on January 9th, when attending the official opening ceremony at the new territorial social service centre in Borovlyany (Minsk Region)

“I’m happy to be here, because we have recently discussed territorial social service centres’ functions at the Council of the Republic,” Ms. Kochanova said. “Life expectancy in Belarus is going up, as is the number of people who are past retirement. They do not work anymore, but are still active; they want to meet, communicate, and be useful to Belarus.”

She went on to express her firm belief that the centre will become a gravitation point for people who are in their well-deserved years of retirement, “Everything is here to do what you like to do, and help those who need it. I’d like to thank you for the effort Minsk Region extends to support people in need. There are younger people working at the centre, as well as those who are older. This is what mercy, kindness, and empathy mean. We have to help each other”.

After launch, the centre will be able to provide social services to 250 people simultaneously. They also plan to start a one-of-a-kind project: social services that would help young disabled people without the need to institutionalise them.

As the Speaker of the Council of the Republic emphasised, all that was made possible thanks to President Lukashenko’s policies.

“None of this would exist if not for the Head of State. He always says to us: ‘People, fair treatment of people is the most important thing’. He always insists that we should treat people with compassion. It’s very important that President Lukashenko advances policies like this; no other country in the world has that,” she added.
