Golovchenko: Minsk, Beijing demonstrate desire to develop polycentric world order

Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko has met today with the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Li Qiang

At the beginning of the meeting, the Belarusian Prime Minister recalled the phrase of Chinese President Xi Jinping, which he said during a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on March 1st, 2023, “Our countries have established exemplary relations based on time-tested friendship, a solid foundation of political trust and co-operation in a new era."

“This epochal phrase very clearly characterises the level of our relations that have been achieved, and any challenges in the international arena only strengthen our iron brotherhood and confirm the saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed,” Mr. Golovchenko stressed, adding that the countries had gone through difficult times together in countering the global COVID-19 pandemic. “In the beginning of the pandemic, Belarus was among the first to send two aircraft with more than 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the People's Republic of China. China, in turn, sent four aircraft with humanitarian aid to Belarus and provided 7.5m doses of vaccines. We are very grateful to the Chinese side for that,” he said.

The Prime Minister also focused on mutual understanding of the parties in geopolitics, “Minsk and Beijing provide mutual support in the international arena on all key issues and demonstrate a desire to develop a polycentric world order, deepen interaction through the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation and BRICS.”

Mr. Golovchenko also voiced Belarus’ attitude to the topic of the territorial integrity of the People's Republic of China, “The Republic of Belarus consistently adheres to the one-China principle, providing support in the issues of Taiwan, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong.”

In conclusion, the Prime Minister noted that Belarus is confident that the Chinese side supports the issue of Belarus joining the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation in an accelerated format, which was announced in yesterday's speech by the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Li Qiang, at a meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government in Bishkek.
