Opinion: EU sweeping problem with migrants under the carpet instead of trying to settle it
Instead of making important strategic decisions, the EU leadership is sweeping the problem of migrants under the carpet – as noted by publicist and political scientist Aleksei Dzermant in his talk with Alfa Radio
Earlier, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban said that his country is ready to bring illegal migrants to the main square of Brussels if the pressure on Budapest from the EU on the issue of combating the influx of illegal immigrants continues.
“The problem of migrants in the European Union is being swept under the carpet instead of being settled. Large-scale strategic decisions should be made at the level of the EU leadership, i.e., agreements with neighbours on joint border protection and joint control over migration flows. Are they doing this? No, they are not,” Aleksei Dzermant noted.
The expert stressed that due to the destabilisation of the situation in other countries, migration flows to the EU are increasing.
“No strategic decisions are being made. Countries like Hungary have to suffer from this. They can’t cope with this on their own. Therefore, Viktor Orban is trying to at least express his dissatisfaction in this way. He speaks correctly. The only thing, of course, is that accusations will fall on him again and he may be threatened with sanctions, but he’s sending the right signals,” the political scientist added.
