G20 countries pledged to reform UN and WTO

The Group of 20 (G20) foreign ministers have agreed at a meeting in New York to reform the main international organisations, including the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) – as stated by the Foreign Ministry of Brazil, which holds the presidency of the G20, TASS reports

“At the initiative of Brazil, the G20 members adopted a document – Call to Action on Global Governance Reform – which contains commitments to reform and modernise major international organisations such as the United Nations and the WTO. The document also points to the need to improve the international financial architecture,” the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The text adopted at the end of the meeting underlines that the countries ‘commit to reform the UN Security Council’. The changes should relate to its composition, effectiveness and transparency. It is noted that the UN Security Council needs ‘an expanded composition that will improve the representation of underrepresented or underrepresented regions and groups such as Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean’.

In the agreed document, the G20 countries also supported the idea of ‘jointly attracting large amounts of concessional financing in order to expand the World Bank’s capabilities to support low- and middle-income countries that need help in meeting global challenges’.
