From construction to technology: Lazarevich revealed details of Belarus-China co-operation

A new international standard swimming pool officially opened in Minsk on Wednesday, November 6. The pool was built as part of the technology and economy aid from the Chinese government. First Deputy Chairperson of the Minsk City Executive Committee Nadezhda Lazarevich revealed details of the Belarus-China partnership to Alfa Radio.

Ms. Lazarevich emphasised that Belarus works together with various regions of China.

“The Chair of the Minsk City Executive Committee visited Beijing this year to discuss strategic issues and projects about to be launched. Just recently, we opened our famous swimming pool, probably the largest one in the CIS, a jewel of Minsk that both locals and tourists can enjoy. It’s a great place for recreational swimming and other sports, as well international competitions and SPA treatments. But of course, it’s mostly been designed for our pro athletes. Another facility is about to be commissioned. All that, from construction to technology, was a gift from our Chinese partners. That is just one area of our interactions with the PRC,” she said.

The municipal official also revealed that many industrial manufacturers are upgrading their technical capabilities.

“We launch new production lines, build new plants. The lion’s share of equipment we use comes from China. The PRC helped us a lot in our technological development. MAZ, for example, is soon going to finish construction of a new plant, with equipment supplied for the most part by China. It’s going to open as soon as the next year, so they’ll be able to make twice as many buses as they do now: up to 3,000 per year,” explained the Deputy Chair.

Companies like Minsk Gear Plant, Atlant, Integral, Planar, and BelOMO also work closely with their Chinese partners, purchasing their equipment and supplying their products there.

“As for interactions between local authorities, we have signed a co-operation agreement with another Chinese region, a highly developed one when it comes to industry and investment. A number of companies already plan their visits there in order to strengthen their partnerships. The results, I believe, should defy imagination. It would give an economic boost to our companies and improve our GRP. Not only for Minsk, but for our country as a whole,” pointed out Ms. Lazarevich.

She added that Belarus and Vietnam were also able to build up a warm and cordial relationship.

“We signed a memorandum on co-operation and hosted Minsk Days in Ho Chi Minh City this year. It has also been agreed that the first three students from Minsk universities are going to go to Ho Chi Minh as part of the student exchange programme, while we, in turn, welcome three Vietnamese students here. Not many, but it’s a start. Of course, we co-operate with Vietnam when it comes to food supplies; we have signed an agreement and are now partners with their industrial companies. Our manufacturers like MAZ, Integral, etc., ship their products there, and I think the range of those products will expand further,” concluded the Deputy Chair.
