French Energy Ministry urges its citizens to continue to observe ‘energy sobriety’ plan
French Minister for Energy Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher called on fellow citizens to observe ‘energy sobriety’ and save electricity in summer – as reported by RIA Novosti
According to the minister, there will be no shortage of electricity in summer, but it is important to continue to comply with certain measures.
“There’s no risk of running out of electricity. The summer energy sobriety plan is a continuation of the winter one, which enabled us to save 12 percent of the usual consumption of gas and electricity, avoiding blackouts and reducing CO2 emissions by 2.7 percent per year,” Agnès Pannier-Runacher said in an interview.
She stressed that measures to save electricity are not temporary, they should become a habit. Agnès Pannier-Runacher also recalled the law that has existed since 2007, according to which it is impossible to adjust the air conditioner in summer to a temperature below 26 degrees, which was rarely observed before. Pannier-Runacher also urged motorists not to drive faster than 110 km/h, which is ‘good for the planet and saves 20 percent on fuel’.
In July 2022, French President Emmanuel Macron instructed the government to prepare a plan for the responsible consumption of energy for businesses and citizens amid a reduction in gas supplies from Russia and the shutdown of half of the country’s nuclear power plant reactors for repairs and preventive maintenance. The ‘energy sobriety’ plan, as Macron called it, should ‘contain specific goals and numerical indicators’ and is designed to abolish the ‘useless lighting’ of objects in cities.
