The military drills, called Steadfast Defender, will involve at least 41,000 troops and at least 50 ships. During the exercise, according to the Financial Times, between five and seven hundred combat sorties will be carried out. The plan is to use ‘real-life geographic data to create more realistic scenarios for troops’.

The purpose of the exercise, according to the publication, is to ‘test an attempt to repel Russian aggression directed against one of the alliance members’. The military manoeuvres are allegedly seen by the alliance as ‘a key part of demonstrating to Moscow the alliance’s readiness for war’.

According to the FT, the military drills will take place in Germany, Poland and the Baltic States in February and March next year. In addition to 31 NATO member countries, Sweden will take part in them, which is still awaiting approval for its entry into the military bloc from Turkiye and Hungary.
