Swiss journalist said Orban created chance for negotiations on Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has created a chance for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and the leaders of the European Union envy him and therefore continue to attack him – as stated by Roger Koppel, the owner and Editor-in-Chief of the right-wing conservative magazine Die Weltwoche, who accompanied the Head of the Hungarian Government on trips to Kiev and Moscow last week, TASS reports

“Viktor Orban has created a chance for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, while Brussels is only capable of a military confrontation with Moscow," the journalist, who was a member of the Swiss Parliament until 2023 and is known as an old acquaintance of the Hungarian Prime Minister, said. He added that it is ‘completely absurd’ that the EU leaders are expressing dissatisfaction and even outrage over Viktor Orban's trip to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "At the same time, of course, they clearly look at him with envy," Mr. Koppel noted.

In his opinion, Viktor Orban's merit lies in the fact that he seeks to ‘keep open diplomatic channels of communication’ with both Moscow and Kiev in order to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. Mr. Koppel believes that this peacekeeping mission has already brought results, as both sides have confirmed that they do not reject the possibility of negotiations. The journalist regarded the willingness of the parties to the conflict to talk about peace as a step in the right direction.
